How it Works

Making adaptation accessible no matter your starting point

01
Register
Step 01

Register & Take the Pledge

Create an account and if you represent a heritage site or cultural practice, take the pledge so that your work counts towards our global mission of 3,000 sites and practices taking adaptation action by 2030, AND access our first-of-its-kind, action-oriented training program to help you guide your community through locally led adaptation.

Pledge card: "I pledged to take a locally-led climate adaptation action for my community's heritage site or cultural practice by 2030!"
02
Onboard
Step 02

Take the diagnostic + onboard to the community

Answer a few questions and we'll recommend a starting point for you in our action-oriented training program for locally led adaptation, which you can change at any time. Then continue to sign-up for the community so that you can engage directly with others!

Learn & Act
Step 03

Start planning & adapting with our action-oriented training

Guide your community through locally led adaptation with our action-oriented training program, packed with multimedia lessons, case studies, toolkits, and worksheets, as well as access to expert office hours, our Resource Library, and Regional Climate Data Hub. You will deepen your understanding of climate change and engage stakeholders and community members to:

  • Identify heritage values at risk
  • Assess climate impacts
  • Explore adaptation options
  • Publish a risk and adaptation assessment
  • Develop adaptation actions
  • Implement those actions
  • Monitor, evaluate, and learn from them
  • Share with others!

Stage A: Deepen your Climate & Heritage Understanding

Learn & Organize: Build knowledge and momentum by enhancing your understanding of climate science, learning how it intersects with heritage, and organizing your community for action.

3 Sections
27 Lessons

Stage B: Complete a Community-Led Risk Assessment & Adaptation Plan

Assess & Plan: Engage your community and use localised climate models from our Climate Data Hub to weave science with the knowledge your community already holds into a co-created risk assessment and adaptation plan.

6 Sections
20 Lessons

Stage C: Take an Adaptation Action, Monitor & Evaluate

Implement & Learn: Put your plan into practice—whether new site interventions, updated management policies, or community-led campaigns. Then monitor progress, adapt as needed, and share your story!

Why it Matters

Climate change is the fastest growing threat to heritage sites and cultural practices worldwide, yet many are unable to take needed action—there’s already so much to do, it’s hard to know where to start, and it often feels like you’re the only one thinking about it. You’re not alone! There are thousands of people like you around the world, so we started our 3000 x 2030 pledge to unite us, and community platform with action-oriented training to support us. We adapt better when we work together!

“Heritage Adapts! is important because it reminds the world that climate adaptation cannot happen without listening to the communities who live with the impacts of climate change every day. In places like Koutammakou, local people are not only protecting heritage sites; they are preserving knowledge systems, cultural identities, and ways of living that have sustained resilience for generations. Too often, the communities most affected by climate change are the least represented in global decision-making. This initiative helps restore that balance by giving visibility and voice to local stewards whose experiences and solutions are essential for climate justice.”
Ibrahim Tchan, Heritage Adapts! Founding Steward, Koutammakou, land of Batammariba
"Heritage Adapts! creates an important bridge between local heritage stewards and a global network of knowledge, experience, and support. For climate-vulnerable sites like Bagerhat in Bangladesh, this platform helps transform complex adaptation challenges into practical and community-centred actions. It gives heritage professionals not only guidance, but also the confidence that they are not working alone."
Khandokar Mahfuz ud Darain, PhD, Heritage Adapts! Founding Steward, Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat
