Why it Matters

Climate change is the fastest growing threat to heritage sites and cultural practices worldwide, yet many are unable to take needed action—there’s already so much to do, it’s hard to know where to start, and it often feels like you’re the only one thinking about it. You’re not alone! There are thousands of people like you around the world, so we started this pledge to unite us, and community to support us. We adapt better when we work together!

Local action, Global impact

3000 by 2030

Heritage Adapts! is recognized as 1 of 120 U.N. Global Climate Action Agenda "Plans to Accelerate Solutions" and is aligned with the Cultural Heritage target of the Global Goal on Adaptation. This means that when you join Heritage Adapts!, you're not only acting locally but are connected globally, with your work counting towards our collective goal of at least 3,000 heritage sites and cultural practices taking adaptation action by 2030.

Sites & Practices Taking Action

Heritage Adapts! is important because it reminds the world that climate adaptation cannot happen without listening to the communities who live with the impacts of climate change every day. In places like Koutammakou, local people are not only protecting heritage sites; they are preserving knowledge systems, cultural identities, and ways of living that have sustained resilience for generations. Too often, the communities most affected by climate change are the least represented in global decision-making. This initiative helps restore that balance by giving visibility and voice to local stewards whose experiences and solutions are essential for climate justice.”
Ibrahim Tchan, Heritage Adapts! Founding Steward, Koutammakou, land of Batammariba
"Heritage Adapts! creates an important bridge between local heritage stewards and a global network of knowledge, experience, and support. For climate-vulnerable sites like Bagerhat in Bangladesh, this platform helps transform complex adaptation challenges into practical and community-centred actions. It gives heritage professionals not only guidance, but also the confidence that they are not working alone."
Khandokar Mahfuz ud Darain, PhD, Heritage Adapts! Founding Steward, Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat
Take the Pledge & Join the Community

How it Works

Every heritage steward is invited to pledge to take locally led climate adaptation action for their heritage site or cultural practice by 2030, and to join the online Community of Action platform for the training, resources, and network to support you. No matter the type or scale of heritage you represent—whether natural and cultural places, objects and collections, intangible cultural heritage and practices, and beyond—Heritage Adapts! is for you. Even if you don't represent a site or practice, you are valued here too.
We adapt better together!
